THE COM SQUAD

Teens Building Communities

THE COM SQUAD | Emerging Technologies | Lifespan

In lifespan CMC theories are shown by children and teens communicating and building communities through the internet.

  • Teens in Africa have a website http://cooltech.iafrica.com/technews/993277.htm  they can use to chat, learn about politics, play games, learn about technology and find entertainment news. They even have a place for blogs.
  • There is a Balkans website http://www.pbuuc.org/socact/balkans.html that has a link for teens to help with relief in Balkan. This site also offers a reference to political information in Kosovo.
  • Yahoo has a teen chat room where teens can communicate with other teens all over the world allowing another avenue for shared experiences and building relationships.

  • Kids have PBS Kids http://pbskids.org/everything.html that opens a forum for learning and interaction.
  • There is a European website calls Children’s BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/  that  has links to play games, learn art, music. sports and there is a place where kids can chat and talk about daily problems.

Because CMC is defined by John December as a process of human communication via computers, involving people, situated in particular context, engaging in process t shape the media for a variety of purpose (CMC 15), Parents must monitor what the children and teens are expose to. Hence there are several site requiring downloads that enable parents to monitor the child or teens use of computer.

Just as in the physical world--what Net folks sometimes call the "real world"--there are some risks that might be associated with children using the Net.

Some of these dangers include exposure to material that is "adult" in nature, especially violent or sexually oriented materia, harassing messages, someone might try to arrange to meet a child in the "real world" with evil intent, a child might become involved in something unsavory--harassing someone else, say, or trading pirated software, music, or other copyrighted materials.

Examples of programs that monitor childrens activities are   http://www.controlkids.com/ and http://www.microsoft.com/mom/default.mspx.
